THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on October 2 in the years identified:
1979:Minister
of Youth, Sport and Community Development Hugh Small and representatives of the Church are to examine the facilities of the National Stadium on October 3, in an effort to resolve the issues concerning the use of the stadium by religious organisations. The visit to the stadium follows a second meeting of both parties at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Development. At this meeting, the minister re-emphasised that there is no attempt to spite the churches in the present re-examination of the rental policy of the stadium as it affects non-sporting organisations. He is prepared, he says, to propose certain conditions for its use by the Church. At the meeting with the minister are the parliamentary secretary in the youth and sports ministry, Senator Paul Miller, and Raymond Sharpe, public relations officer of INSPORT. 1983:Minister
Industry and Commerce Douglas Vaz says that some of the benefits and incentives that came initially with the formalising of the parallel market had been eroded and he is working hard to find solutions. Mr Vaz gives a statement to The Gleaner to correct the impression that might have been created from an interview published in last Sunday’s Gleaner.
He says whereas the interview of me conducted by Winston Witter is substantively accurate, I am surprised that the stale date of the interview is not stated as is The Gleaner’s norm. At the time that I was interviewed (about four weeks ago), it was correct to say that the parallel market had helped the local producers since its inception.”
