Stakeholders on importance of Global Media and Information Conference 2017
Stakeholders in the upcoming Global Media and Information Conference 2017 were part of a Gleaner Editors’ Forum on Thursday. They were asked to complete the following sentence: The media and literacy conference is important for Jamaica because:
Jessica Lewis, coordinator, Mona Information Literacy Unit at UWI, main library
“Because it is going to bring groups in Jamaica together to educate them in a way that they have not come together before.”
Isabel Viera, adviser, communication and information, UNESCO Cluster Office for the Caribbean
“Because it will raise awareness about what media and information literacy is and how it can help people cope with day-to-day life.”
Paulette Kerr, chief librarian, UWI Mona campus
“It is important because we need conversation about media and information literacy in this era of misinformation, untruths, and fake news.”
Erika Walker, team coordinator, UNESCO communication and information
“Just from a tourism point of view, people from all over the world will be coming here to see what Jamaica can offer to them in the realm of information literacy.”
Clement Lambert, School of Education, UWI
“Because we have to move from the notion that it is a them and us situation. It is a holistic thing where we are all involved. We make and consume media.”
Abrahim Simmons, co-founder, Jayecan
“Young people will know how to determine credible sources of information and use media and information to tackle issues affecting them.”
