Patriarch lands Cash Pot feature

PATRIARCH (right), with Dick Cardenas aboard, winning the 13th running of the Cash Pot ‘Only One For Me’ Trophy at Caymanas Park yesterday.

PATRIARCH YESTERDAY thwarted a strong stretch challenge from ANOTHER VIGOROUS to land the 1200-metre Cash Pot ‘Only One For Me’ Trophy, drawing first blood in the Supreme Ventures Limited Two-Year-Old Series.

The speedy bay colt shot to the front with jockey Dick Cardenas and opened up a five-length lead, leaving the half-mile marker in the $3.25 million race.

Outsped in third down the backstretch, ANOTHER VIGOROUS swooped down into contention with apprentice Dane Dawkins coming off the home turn and attacked PATRIARCH a furlong and a half out.

However, Anthony Nunestrained PATRIARCH had loads in reserve and had an answer for each question ANOTHER VIGOROUS asked on his outside, maintaining a length to the wire where the margin was reduced to three-quarters in the official placings.

PATRIARCH won at odds of 9-5, snapping 3-5 favourite ANOTHER VIGOROUS’s shot at the $1 million bonus to sweep the three-race series, which continues next month, with the Pick 3 Super Challenge going a furlong longer.

Rowan Mathie’s ANOTHER VIGOROUS was one of three horses in the event who qualified for the series bonus by having come under the auctioneer’s hammer at the annual yearling series.

TAKE COMMAND

PATRIARCH closed separate two-timers for Nunes and Cardenas. Nunes won the sixth event with 6-1 chance API at 1000 metres straight.

Panamanian Cardenas, a 2011 champion at Caymanas Park, has been riding up a storm since arriving to take command of Nunes’s stable last month, opening his account with ZACKONTHEATTACK at odds of 2-1 in the fifth race.

Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta shared honours with Nunes, also saddling two winners on the 11-race card – QUEEN OF BAGDAD in the third at odds of 4-1 and HOVER CRAFT, who was surprisingly sent off at 9-1 in the eighth.
