Local stalwarts to be honoured by Charlton’s Academy

FAE ELLINGTON, Lascelles Dunkley, Frank Brown, Leebert Halliman, Patrick ‘Jackie’ Walters and Emerson ‘Digie’ Henry are some of the persons that will be honoured at the third annual Charlton’s Academy’s Heroes Day Awards and six-aside tournament, which takes place at 2 North Greater Portmore, or the Old Stadium, in St Catherine, today at 8:30 a.m.

Ellington, a former broadcaste­r with the Jamaica Broadcasti­ng Corporatio­n (now Television Jamaica) and a lecturer at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communicat­ion, an award-winning actress and voice artist, will receive the lifetime Achievemen­t Award.

Meanwhile, Dunkley, a former Jamaica and YMCA centre forward; Danville ‘Dan’ Clarke, former Railway FC goalkeeper; Frank ‘Preckay’ Brown, former Railway FC left back and Jamaica captain; and Paul ‘Coolie Foot’ Thomas, a former Liguanea FC right back will be honoured for their excellence as football players for both club and country, and for their roles in helping Jamaica finish second in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying final round in 1965, when there was only one qualifier.

Three schoolboy coaches will also be recognised. They are Halliman, Walters and Henry. While Ivanhoe ‘Doprey’ Nelson will be awarded for excelling as a youth footballer.

EXTENSIVE WORK

Meanwhile, there will be a humanitari­an award for Doneth Rowe, who has done extensive work in the community, and an ecclesiast­ical award for Monsignor Gregory Ramkissoon.

The event which gets under way with a dress parade, is held in honour of former Cavalier coach Leighton Duncan. The dress parade will be followed by the start of the six-a-side competitio­ns (senior and under13) at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. and all awardees are expected to be in attendance.

“Every year, we find people who have done well for their country and highlight them. This year, we have shown some growth with some product sponsors coming on board,” said Charlton Academy’s Shaun Charlton.
