A very fiery municipal corporation meeting
LAST THURSDAY, there was not a dull moment inside the Clarendon Municipal Corporation as almost every item for discussion proved to be one that evoked some sort of argument.
Kicking off the matters arising from the minutes, Councillor for the York Town division Uphell Purcell was determined to make his point that the tablets presented by Minister of Local Government Desmond McKenzie to the councillors and members of the Poor Relief Department were not a gift from the minister, but rather, the Government.
“Desmond did not give us the tablets. The Government did that,” said Purcell, who was immediately ordered to “Siddung man!” by one of the councillors.
“We do not want a minister profiling as if he is the one giving us nothing. Don’t want to get into a debate,” Purcell stubbornly continued while Romaine Morris from the Mocho division interjected with, “Oh! Come on! This government made it possible.”
No sooner had the dust settled on that one before another heated discussion arose, this time about two big potholes – one on Anderson Drive off Glenmuir Road – the danger it posed, and the council’s inability to get it patched.
A suggestion was made about purchasing the materials needed to patch it, however, Scean Barnswell warned that they ought to be careful as an attempt to take on the job could see them being in breach.
