The importance of good relationships at work
AS WE continue our lesson from last week. I hope you are all making use of the time you have on hand and are now giving attention to your SBA, which is critical to your final grade. An office personnel or worker must have the ability to perform efficiently in the areas of: Literacy Numeracy Word processing Communication Time management Problem-solving Analysis
ATTITUDES REQUIRED OF THE OFFICE PERSONNEL OR WORKER
Team spirit Tolerance Cooperation
HE OR SHE IS REQUIRED TO:
(a) Be a good team player, offering/taking suggestions and making oneself available to help others as needed. (b) Be patient, willing to follow instructions without displaying negative attitudes and/or mannerisms. (c) Offer mutual assistance in working towards a common goal. Punctuality – Must arrive at work station on time and complete given tasks in a timely manner. Honesty – Must be trustworthy and believable. Willingness – To help the organisation achieve its objectives. Regularity – Should be regular in attendance at work or in carrying out other assigned duties. Deportment – Should be professional in appearance, wearing the appropriate attire: clothes, shoes, name tags, etc (as prescribed by the organisation) clean, without body odour and excessive jewellery and have a proper hairdo.
IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS
This refers to the manner in which people interact with each other. It is important that office employees establish and maintain good relationships with staff at all levels, with clients/customers and with other stakeholders.
RELATIONSHIP WITH SUPERVISORS
Office staff should assist and cooperate with their supervisors by: Accepting suggestions graciously – without attitude. Listening carefully and giving feedback to show understanding. Offering helpful suggestions. Requesting assistance in a timely and polite manner. Offering constructive ideas that will make the workload easier.
RELATIONSHIP WITH COLLEAGUES INTERNAL MAINTAIN GOOD RELATIONSHIPS BY:
Showing respect for each other. Following instructions. Adhering to rules and regulations. Being non-critical. Being helpful to others in ensuring that duties are done in a timely and efficient manner.
As students, you will no doubt acquire some of the above attitudes. As you relate with your peers and teachers, remember to put these into practice as well as apply them to your course of study. Next week, we will look at communication. Have a good week.
