Garvey, Harrison in Ja squad for four-day opener

- Jermaine Lannaman Gleaner Writer

OPENING BATSMAN Garth Garvey and lanky left-arm spinner Paul Harrison are set to make their first-class debuts after they were included in the Jamaica Scorpions 13-man squad for their opening Digicel Regional Four-day clash against threetime defending champions Guyana Jaguars in Guyana next weekend.

Garvey and Harrison, both members of the Kingston Cricket Club, have been rewarded for consistent performances in national two-day competitions in recent seasons.

Garvey ended with the most runs and centuries in the national Senior Cup earlier this year, while Harrison has been among the top five wicket-takers during its last three editions.

Harrison and Garvey join University of the West Indies wicketkeeper Amanja Morris as the only players in the squad who are yet to play regional cricket.

Both Morris and Garvey are former national youth players. Morris comes in for Chadwick Walton, who is absent due to West Indies duties.

The squad, which is scheduled to depart this weekend, also includes out-offavour West Indies middle-order batsman Assad Fudadin, who replaces Devon Thomas as the team’s overseas player.

Thomas has returned to his native Antigua and is slated to represent Leeward Islands Hurricanes.

BOWLERS RECALLED

Meanwhile, fast bowlers Jason Dawes of Kensington and Keno Wallace of St Thomas have earned recalls in the absence of Jerome Taylor, Reynard Leveridge, and young Oshane Thomas, who are on West Indies and West Indies “A” duties.

Dawes and Wallace are likely to share the new ball with Kingston allrounder Derval Green, the other pacer in the squad.

The spin bowling unit, which will be without injured regular captain Nikita Miller, is set to be marshalled by Jamaica Defence Force left-arm wrist spinner Dennis Bulli and Damani Sewell.

Off-spinner Sewell is yet to make his first-class debut but has represented Jamaica in onedayers.

The squad, which also features exiting strokemakers Brandon King, Trevon Griffiths, and Fabian Allen, is set to be captained by Paul Palmer, who was relieved of the post for most of last season.
