Three honoured at the Monsignor Gladstone Wilson Awards Banquet

-

ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2017, the St George’s College Old Boys’ Association held the 14th staging of its prestigious Monsignor Gladstone Wilson Awards Banquet at the Mona Visitors Lodge. This award was started in 1999 to raise funds for the school and to honour the greatest Georgian, Rt Reverend Monsignor Gladstone Orlando Stanislaus Wilson (1906-1974) Class of 1921, PhD, MA, BA Hons, BD, DD, DCL, BCL, FRSA, Diploma in Social Science and who was considered the seventh most learned man in the world. The award is presented to past students of St George’s College who have given distinguished service to their

as well as their community and the wider Jamaica. This award was initially an annual event but became a bi-yearly event in 2005.

The 2017 hosting of the event honoured three past students – Deacon Clive Chambers, Peter Chang and Danny Ho Lung – all of whom far exceeded the criteria of the award. The combination of the calibre of the awardees, coupled with the class of 1967, who were celebrating their 50th anniversary, saw a record turnout with more than 380 persons in attendance. Deacon Clive Chambers was having a double celebration as one of the awardees and a member of the class of 1967. He was chosen to reply on behalf of the awardees and to introduce the class of 1967, whom he took down memory lane.

The hall was beautifully decorated by Dulcie Bogues in the light blue and white colours of the school and a scrumptious meal was provided by Neville Lyn (class of 1967) of Patsy Lyn Caterers. The night was made even more enjoyable by the great music of Maurice Gordon, Lebbert Morrison and Ramone Smith who thrilled the crowd with some oldies but goodies. We were also treated to the melodious voice of Yvette Batts, who sang some favourites that were blasts from the past.

Another highlight of the night was the generous donations that were made to the St Georges College Endowment Fund by the classes of 1967, 1973 and 1976 as well as various individual alumnus; these funds will be used for the growth and betterment of the school.

We would be remiss if we did not recognise the hard work of the organising committee of Wayne Wray (chairman), Lyndon Latour (president), Ian Telfer (vice president), Dwight Hamilton (secretary), Akeel Herdsman, Deacon Clive Chambers, Michael Chuck, Donald Jackson, Howard McIntosh, Roger Thompson, Dwayne Goodson, Ray Wong, and Charles Williams, who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the function.
