Beware of ingenious folk seeking roadside assistance at nights – SSP Allen
SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT of Police Calvin Allen, head of the Traffic Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, says motorists should maintain vigilance, especially at nights, and not give in to their human nature of wanting to assist persons purporting to have car trouble, for fear they could be easy targets for thieves.
“Certainly, if you are driving at a late hour of the night, and even in the day, but more so at late hours, please ensure that your doors are locked and your windows are up and just remain alert,” Allen said.
“It is somewhat mean to say, but you have to also be careful of vehicles that might seem to be broken down and the kindness of your heart speaks out in terms of assisting. You have to be careful, because persons have their different tricks in order to trap people and this may just be one such.”
Allen said that while stopping at traffic lights poses a certain risk, particularly at nights, he would not advise otherwise, but urged drivers to stay vigilant and take extra care in protecting themselves.
“The practice by some drivers of not stopping at traffic signals during late hours is a no-no. It has tremendous dangers, given the world we live in; and remember that not stopping can also be fatal. I would advise that drivers stay alert and be aware of their surroundings, lock all doors and keep the windows rolled up,” Allen said.
