Junior champions Gaynstead overpower Papine

DEFENDING JUNIOR champions Gaynstead got off to an impressive start in the opening matches in the second round of the ISSA Urban Schoolgirl Netball Competitio­n at the Leila Robinson Court on Thursday after blowing away Papine High 44-9.

On a day when all the matches were affected by rain, which resulted in the games not going the full distances and all the senior matches being postponed, the defending champions came out firing on all cylinders in their Group Two encounter. They led 15-1 after the first quarter and went into the half-time break 26-4 before cruising in the final two quarters.

Merl Grove joined the defending champions at the top in the group after upsetting former champions, The Queen’s School, 18-17 in a close encounter.

UNBEATEN

St Catherine High kept their unbeaten tag in the competitio­n after taking care of Mona High 34-12 in their Group One encounter. They had quarterly scores of 11-1, 18-4, 27-19 before closing out at 34-12.

Former champions St Hugh’s also had a big win in the group after getting by Jose Marti 31-8. In another match in the group, Holy Childhood surprised Camperdown 28-25.

The competitio­n will continue on Monday at the same venue with the senior matches that were postponed, along with the Excelsior vs Meadowbroo­k junior encounter, which was not played.
