Senior schoolgirl netball gets under way today

- Raymond Graham Gleaner Writer

AFTER LAST Thursday’s postponement because of inclement weather, the first set of senior matches in the second round of the Urban ISSA schoolgirl netball competition will be played this morning at 10:30 at the Leila Robinson Courts. Defending champions Excelsior, with former outstanding Queen’s High player Hasana Williams now in their line-up, look set to carry their impressive form from the preliminary round when they go up against Holy Trinity in a Group One encounter. The Christopher Smart-coached team has been in excellent form, and another big win is expected here. Unbeaten teams Camperdown High, the 2015 champions, and St Catherine High also look set to continue their winning ways. Camperdown will go up against former champions Ardenne, while St Catherine will do battle with Tivoli.

MOST IMPROVED TEAM

Last year’s beaten finalists Gaynstead, undoubtedly the most improved team in schoolgirl netball, should start second-round action with a big win when they meet Immaculate in Group Two action. Gaynstead should be motivated by their junior team, which had the biggest win in the opening round last Thursday when they dumped Papine 44-9. The other matches in this group will have former champions, the Queen’s High, facing St Andrew Technical, and Campion meeting Norman Manley. There will also be a rescheduled junior match this morning as Excelsior will meet Meadowbrook.
