Calabar secure fifth taekwondo league title
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Calabar High School are basking in their fifth hold on the McKay Security Jamaica Taekwondo Association High School League, which they won 4-1 over St George’s College.
Calabar vice-principal Calvin Rowe presented team captain Trevor Webb Jr with the trophy at the Red Hills Road school recently, urging the lads to continue their dominance of the league, which mirrors the school year, September to June.
The defending champions ticked off win number four at Olympian Kenneth Edwards’ Jamaica Superstars Martial Arts Open in February, dominating what turned out to be an abbreviated season due to the cancellation of the ShaiTai Open, as well as Ningen Martial Arts’ decision to stage a closed tournament in May.
St George’s College denied Calabar a clean sweep of the season, taking the 41st Seido Open title at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium in June to pull one back at 4-1, setting up what was expected to be a thrilling battle at the postponed Jamaica Taekwondo Open.
However, the memorial service for veteran taekwondo practitioner, Harry Chin-Hing, the former head of Mandeville Taekwondo, forced a postponement to late October, outside the 2016-2017 season, delaying the official presentation ceremony.
Meanwhile, St George’s served warning of their intent to dethrone Calabar by winning the postponed Jamaica Taekwondo Open, which served as the 2017-2018 season opener on Saturday, October 28.
Calabar, Kingston College, Jamaica College, St George’s College, Wolmer’s and newcomers, Excelsior, coached by Joel Ellis, are participants of the 2017-2018 season.
