WE HAVE NO REGRETS
NEW DUNCANS Pharmacy graced the landscape of Duncans in Trelawny on February 3, 2014. When the proprietors, Simone Burgess Black and her husband, Lucien Black, decided to look for a place to operate a pharmacy, Duncans was not one of the places on their list. Montego Bay and Falmouth were considered. However, the couple soon realised that those areas were already saturated with pharmacies and so they cast their eyes elsewhere.
Burgess Black said one morning at about 3 a.m., her husband had a “revelation”, which prompted him to ask a friend from the area if there was a pharmacy in Duncans. The next day they were in Duncans making inquiries and the current location was secured. The rest is history.
The duo acknowledges that the right decision was taken and they have no regrets about operating the pharmacy in Duncans.
STRONG COMMUNITY BOND
New Duncans Pharmacy is strategically located in a bustling community through which people
from the neighbouring areas of Spicy Hill, Crawle, Clark’s Town, Jackson Town, Brompton and Rio Bueno pass.
The rural setting for a pharmacy fosters a warm relationship with the community.
“We know most of our customers and their families by name. We are affectionately called Mummy, Aunty Simms, Dads, Doc and Elder by some of them,” Burgess Black said.
She has been a pharmacist for more than 20 years and holds a doctor of pharmacy degree from the Ohio State University. She said she is a strong believer in educating before
medicating and enjoys sharing knowledge with her customers, and learns from listening to them.
New Duncans Pharmacy, because of its size, is a ‘professional pharmacy’ and as such, sells only medically related items. The owners make every effort to maintain adequate stock so that customers who bypass other stores to support them are not disappointed. If the items are not available, they are ordered from the suppliers and every effort is made to have them expedited.
