Coach Bartley chides ‘indisciplined’ Jamaica Women’s hockey team performance
JAMAICA’S WOMEN’S hockey team cruised to their second consecutive win of the 2017 Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games qualifiers after scoring a 30 win over Panama at the JN Hockey Field thanks to a brace from Kamille Griffiths, yesterday.
However, coach Christine Bartley chided her players for what she said is their lack of discipline, as she thought their performance was reckless and that the score could have been much greater, had they stuck with the game plan.
“We are happy for the win, it means two from two, so we are actually leading the table, which is good for us. However, I don’t think we played as disciplined as we should, thus the low score. We would have expected to score more against a Panama team that has just started playing the game.
“But that will happen when you don’t stick with the game plan. I guess we will have to go back and work on the things we did wrong today, get some rest, recover and come Wednesday for a better showing,” she commented.
The hosts went ahead after 11 minutes when Griffiths netted from the penalty corner. A minute later, she fired home from close range to put the Jamaicans up 2-0. Then, moments after the half-time break Ebony McClean added a third to put the game beyond Panama’s reach. But despite penning Panama in their defensive third for most of the secondhalf, the Jamaicans were more caught up in individual play and this prevented them from adding to the lead, according to Bartley.
“It was a bit of indiscipline. They dropped their standard to that of the other team, and the pattern of play we would have practiced. But they are youngsters. They will get indisciplined at times, so we just have to get them refocused and ready to play again,” she added. REST DAY
The tournament will take a rest day today and return with female action on Wednesday. Jamaica leads both the men’s and women’s categories with maximum six points after two games each.
After their 6-0 win over Guyana in their opening game on Sunday, Jamaica women lead their section with six points, followed by Guyana and Bermuda on four each. While the Jamaicans men lead their category with six points ahead of Guatemala and Guyana on three points, after a second successive win over Puerto Rico yesterday.
