The following events took place on November 16 in the years identified:
1975:in The Kiwanis Clubs Jamaica calls on leaders of the country to moderate their statements and actions so as to encourage discipline and respect for law and order. A statement from the lieutenant governor of Kiwanis International, Lloyd Distant, outlines a number of recent happenings which had “serious, deleterious effect on law and order and discipline within a large segment of the society”. It ends with a plea to the PNP Government and the JLP Opposition to “instill in the minds of members and followers the sanctity of discipline and the inculcation of the rules of law and order as an essential way for life.”
1975:leader Olive Lewin, of the Jamaica Folk Singers, is presented with a citation and honorary membership of the Diocesan Festival Choir, at the choir’s thanksgiving service held at Kingston Parish Church. The citation, which is read by the secretary of the choir, lists all the honours conferred on Lewin in her years singing and the contributions she has made to music in Jamaica. It is afterwards presented to her by Archdeacon E.L. Maxwell.
1999:communication, Poor parent-child corporal punishment, physical abuse and teenage pregnancy are cited among the primary problems which parenting initiatives in Jamaica must address. The problems and possible programmes of action to counter them are outlined by Heather Ricketts during the opening of the annual conference of the Coalition for Better Parenting.
