WESTERN BUREAU: DANA MINTO, the 50-year-old nurse who was involved in an accident which claimed the lives of two persons in Glendevon last week, was offered bail on Friday in the sum of $500,000 when she appeared in the St James Parish Court.

Minto, who appeared in court with a large bandage on her neck, listened quietly as her lawyer, Trevor Ho Lyn, successfully applied to Parish Judge Kacia Grant for bail on her behalf.

In making the bail application on behalf of his client, Ho Lyn said that Minto was not a flight risk, as she had voluntarily turned herself in to the police.

“The accused (Minto) was not taken into custody when the incident took place. She was asked to come to the police station, and she did, and then she was arrested and charged,” said Ho Lyn. “She is clearly not a flight risk, as she voluntarily went to the station when asked.”

The court was also told that a number of documents, to include the post-mortem report, the accident reconstruction report, and the first-responder report, were outstanding from the prosecution’s case file.

Grant subsequently offered bail to Minto in the sum of $500,000 with surety, and ordered her to report to the Coral Gardens Police Station twice weekly and to surrender her travel documents.

MENTION DATE

The case will be mentioned again on February 22, 2018.

Minto was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, following an incident on Monday, November 13, when the Toyota Ipsum all-purpose vehicle she was driving struck four persons along Felicity Road in Glendevon. She was reportedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred.

Fifteen-year-old Shantae Rose, a student of Green Pond High School in the parish, and 52year-old Franklin Hylton were killed on the spot. Rose’s mother and sister, who were also struck by the vehicle, both suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
