UWI’s Garrison dreams of national selection
AFTER BEING sidelined for six weeks due to injuries, University of the West Indies (UWI) striker Davion Garrison gave a man-of-the-match performance in his team’s victory over Sandals South Coast on Sunday.
Garrison scored in the 15th minute and then assisted on strike partner Girvon Brown’s goal four minutes later in the 2-0 win at UWI Bowl, Mona. The slim-built forward also showed industry on both ends of the pitch.
“I am pleased, but it is a team effort. We worked on it in training, leading up to the game. I was out on the injured list after fracturing both sides of my face on the nose and cheek during the first game against Waterhouse here (at UWI),” Garrison told The Gleaner after the game.
“It is good that after being sidelined for six weeks, I came back and scored. This is my second goal after scoring in the 1-1 draw against Waterhouse,” he shared.
WORKING ON FITNESS
“The trainer is working on my fitness and it is coming back, so it is back to the training pitch to do more work in order to get better. The coach showed confidence in me and gave me the start, so I am happy for that,” the former Rivoli United player added.
Garrison also said that the aim is to stay healthy and continue scoring and creating goals in order to get the nod from the coaching staff of the national senior team.
“My main aim is to continue scoring and make the national team. I will continue working hard to do what I have to do,” he said.
He said the team is stronger this season, so they are working hard towards winning the league.
“This team is better as we get in (Ryan) Miller, (Oshane) Jenkins and (Fabian) McCarthy. We will continue to work as a group and follow the coach’s instructions in order to achieve our goal of winning the Premier League in the third season,” he said.
Garrison’s assistant coach, Andrew Peart, described the player as one who has the ability to score and set up goals.
“He (Garrison) is a very good player – a speedy one. He scored and set up the other. But, he needs to improve in terms of his efficiency. Davion has the capability to do some spectacular stuff, but sometimes the killer shot is not there. He is a player we can depend on to set up goals, so once he stays fit, the team will benefit,” Peart said.
