Take Azan’s Magnet in today’s third race
RICHARD AZAN’s MONEY MAGNET had two big outings in grade one recently, November’s Caribbean Sprint and the Diamond Mile, two weeks ago, races which should have the three-year-old filly cherry-ripe for this afternoon’s open allowance, a rung down the ladder, at 1200 metres.
MONEY MAGNET’s main rivals are Anthony Nunes’ ORPHEUS and SIEMPRE BUENO, four and five-yearold, respectively, who have both beaten Azan’s filly in separate races since September.
ORPHEUS ran on to grab the filly at 1200 metres on September 23 and SIEMPRE BUENO outsprinted her at 1000 metres straight on November 25, very close races.
In fact, they were 1-2-3 at the finish over the straight in November, ORPHEUS closing fast for third behind SIEMPRE BUENO and MONEY MAGNET, definitely needing more than five furlongs straight to be effective, which makes him a dangerous horse at six furlongs this week.
SIEMPRE BUENO has picked up 11 pounds for that win but appears to have the confidence of Nunes’ first-call rider, Panamanian Dick Cardenas, who has won aboard the five-year-old in three of his last four starts.
However, allowing MONEY MAGNET 11lb, after getting two pounds from the filly when beating her by a head over the straight, looks a bit too much for SIEMPRE BUENO to pull off with an additional furlong to run.
Whereas SIEMPRE BUENO will try to make all with topweight 57.0 kilos, ORPHEUS will be coming at the death but won’t get first run ahead of MONEY MAGNET.
Though he had beaten her at six furlongs in September, ORPHEUS had some help from MONEY MAGNET, who ducked inside on leaving the gate – a swerve which cost her at least three lengths at the start.
When they met in the Caribbean Sprint, ORPHEUS was outsped with topweight 57.0 kilos and finished seventh whereas MONEY MAGNET was third, a length behind CHACE THE GREAT, losing second in a head-bob to TRADITIONAL PRINCE.
Running in the Diamond Mile, MONEY MAGNET disputed the lead down the backstretch with the likes of TALENTED TONY K, SIR BUDGET, WILL IN CHARGE and CHACE THE GREAT to come off the home turn second.
When SHE’S A MANEATER appeared a furlong and a half out, the horses she split were CHACE THE GREAT and MONEY MAGNET before racing clear of the field.
Apprentice Anthony Thomas will partner MONEY MAGNET, who will carry 53.0 kilos, the same weight Oneil Mullings rode her at in the Diamond Mile in which she was still third up to a furlong out before being relegated by BIGDADDYKOOL and HOUDINI’S MAGIC.
