COME TOMORROW, the food will be aplenty and stomachs will be filled from mass consumptio­n. The last thing on anyone’s mind is exercise. But very quickly, the worry creeps in the moment you’re faced with the after-effects approachin­g the new year. So, why not go in with a game plan and eliminate that stress from now with O’Shane Fitness?

Personal trainer O’Shane Bryant is the founder and programme manager of O’Shane Bryant Fitness, which has made it its duty to help students of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, achieve their fitness and dietary goals. “Holidays are generally periods we tend to rest and overeat, which contribute­s to weight gain and muscle loss. On top of that, it generally takes three days for our bodies to lose gains in strength and endurance. And with that also comes a general reduction in our capacities to keep our blood sugar under control,” he explained to Outlook.

Moderation should be key, and this, he says, is where many people fall short and begin to experience the harmful effects of bad eating.

“So we just need to always balance this (overeating) with moderation, timing and physical activity at the very least,” he added.

He teamed up with nutritioni­st and assistant dietician at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Stacey-Ann Ricketts. They have been working together for almost two years. Her passion for helping people lead a healthier lifestyle through dietary interventi­on has played a major role in creating the e-books.

The e-books include the historical roots of the foods eaten during Christmas; ideal portions, according to age group and gender; and applicable exercise solutions that can be employed throughout the season; practical workouts that can be done at home or with family members to strengthen muscles, joints and build family cohesion; and tips on how to enjoy the foods Jamaicans love during Christmas, while losing inches, especially around the waists.
