High-flying Portmore look to make it six straight
LEADERS PORTMORE United will be looking to extend their win streak to six matches when they host UWI FC in one of five end of year Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) matches today.
Portmore should be high on confidence after their impressive run, but coach Shavar Thomas, is still wary of his opponents, who have only won once in their last seven RSPL matches while tasting defeat on three occasions but handed Portmore their first of two defeats this season.
“On any given day, whichever team shows their best output can win ... We are, however, in form and we are confident and putting in a lot of hard work every day. The players are responding and it’s paying off,” he said.
Thomas says they were not their best the last time the teams met, and he thinks they are in a better position to give a much stronger performance today.
“The approach is to get three points. The last game we played against them we didn’t show our quality and our work. But this time around, I am pretty sure we are up for the challenge,” he insisted.
Portmore lead the RSPL standings with 37 points, two ahead of Arnett Gardens. The top two are followed by Tivoli on 29 and Cavalier and Reno with 24 each.
Thomas wants to end the year on a high and get the team in gear ahead of some of the other challenges they will face in January.
“The mindset is to finish on a high and end the year well. Come next year we will have fixture congestion with the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the St Catherine knockout and the Premier League. We have a lot of games ahead, so we want to finish 2017 solid and then look forward to the New Year,” he stated.
