1989: The 10,000 housing units announced by Prime Minister Michael Manley in September 1989 are to be built over the next four years, according to Joseph Matalon, managing director of West Indies Home Contractor­s Ltd, contractor­s for the project. Matalon is guest speaker at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston, at the weekly luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Kingston.

1999:Labour The Jamaica

Party is predicting chaos on the roads when the Government takes over the Arthur Chin-led Conurban Transit Ltd Franchises at the end of January 2000. The party’s spokesman on transport, Arthur Williams, charges that the Government-controlled Jamaica Urban Transit Company had exhibited severe weaknesses in the areas of scheduling, manpower and the collection of fares since taking over the former eastern franchise. He says that with the acquisitio­n of the much larger Papine and Spanish Town franchises controlled by Conurban, chaos will result on the streets.

1999:Corporatio­n

Burger King recalls the plastic balls that contain giveaway Pokemon toys following the death of a 13-month-old infant who suffocated when the plastic container covered her mouth and nose in the United States. The more than 25 million plastic ‘Poke’ balls’ released by Burger King are being recalled.
