A life well lived
THE PASSING of Ian Boyne has left us at The RJRGLEANER Group in tremendous sadness. Ian had been an invaluable part of our team of opinion writers at The Gleaner for 34 years, and was host of the popular interview programme – Profile – on TVJ for more than 30 years.
In that time, he distinguished himself as a giant of journalism and man of remarkable intellect and insight. His was a crucial voice in the national space, always advocating for improved governance and social conduct in his quest to effect changes that would lead to a better Jamaica for all its citizens.
Ian could manoeuvre seamlessly among diverse topics, and was always armed with facts to bolster his points. His commitment to research and truth reflected his commitment to his loyal readers and viewers who have looked to him for insightful analysis for more than three decades.
Profile, his long-running television interview shows was both aspirational and inspirational. Many young people in Jamaica grew up watching high-achievers being interviewed on Profile and were inspired to someday be interviewed by Ian. Being interviewed by Ian Boyne became a mark of success.
His other television programme – Religious Hardtalk – quickly became another favourite among viewers and in many ways, Ian was the ideal host. He was highly knowledgeable and held very strong opinions, yet was always respectful of opposing views and willing and able to entertain alternative viewpoints without resorting to personal attacks.
It is no wonder that respect for Ian transcends political boundaries. His ability to dissect issues, and not people, set him apart in a society often too quick to condemn.
Most significantly, Ian was a committed family man who adored his wife and children. He was unabashed about his love for those closest to him, and was always ready with a smile and a listening ear for complete strangers. That was his way. Despite his stature, Ian remained the consummate gentleman – thoughtful in his words with others and genuinely empathetic. In his death, the nation has lost an outstanding journalist and broadcaster; an exemplary husband and father; and a man of good character whose life’s story will stand for years to come as a model for generations to follow.
