Reid eyes success at Caribbean Darts Champs

VETERAN JAMAICA Darts Association number-one-ranked national female representative Jennifer Reid is hoping that the ladies can make a strong showing and help the team to win the Caribbean Championship this summer in Trinidad and Tobago.

Reid, who started playing the sport in 1983 and made the national team a year later, wants the team to be ready for the challenges at the championship in July and bring home the title.

“It has been happening for years now. I started playing darts from 1983 and made the Jamaica team in 1984 until now. I only missed one Caribbean Championship, and that was in 1986 because of pregnancy,” Reid, who hails from Montego Bay, told The Gleaner recently.

“I have been to a lot of finals, but won a ladies singles title in 2008, and also won some individual awards. I also won the Caribbean Classic Open for males and females in 1994,” she recounted.

“Now, I am looking forward to the upcoming Caribbean Championship in July in Trinidad and Tobago. In the past, we had four top female players, and now it is down to just two, with myself and number-two ranked Mernel Brown. We have some new players on the female side, [and we are] really looking forward to the championship,” Reid outlined.

“We are hoping to win the title because I don’t like to lose. We are determined, and the new ladies are determined to win, also. Miss Brown is more experienced than I am and she will be in the team. I always tell the other players what to expect and how to handle the competition. I am not a selfish person,” Reid said.

“I am a natural player who hardly trains. I just started training. When I say that I don’t train often, many persons are surprised because of my accomplishment in the sport. I don’t train regularly because I do interior decorating, so I don’t have the time sometimes,” Reid explained.

Reid got involved in darts after visiting the Montego Bay Cricket Club at Jarrett Park during the early 1980s.
