1979:about Bakers are not happy the small profit margin they will be getting from the increase in the price of bread. At an emergency meeting in Kingston, they decide that if something suitable is not forthcomin­g, they will have to stop baking within another three days. At the meeting of the executive of the Jamaica Bakers’ Associatio­n and parish represen– tatives, it is also decided that they will be submitting production figures to the Prices Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. President of the associatio­n Trevor Ferguson tells The Gleaner that they will selling at the old price until present stocks are finished – within another three days.

1983:praises Queen Elizabeth Jamaica for maintainin­g 21 years of parlia– mentary democracy, as she address the Jamaican Parliament at a joint meeting of the Senate and the House of Representa­tives. She congratula­tes the nation on making progress towards economic recovery. Speaking in the context of the internatio­nal recession, Queen Elizabeth states, “It is all the more remarkable that Jamaica is managing to make headway, and I have admired your courageous efforts to recover economic health. Already, you have achieved notable successes in restoring growth, reducing inflation, rebuilding services, and generating new investment­s.”

1989:Manley Michael Norman is sworn in as Prime Minister of Jamaica for the third time in 17 years.
