Calabar, XLCR reign at Corporate Area Champs
CALABAR High clocked the fastest ever 4x400 metres time by a local high school as they marched to the boys’ title at the Digicel Anthrick Corporate Area Development meet inside the National Stadium yesterday.
Led by the outstanding Christopher Taylor Calabar clocked 3:05.04 in the 4x400m to erase the 3:14.75 meet record they set last year. The members of the quartet, in running order , were Anthony Carpenter, Taylor, Shemar Chambers and Malik James-King. Excelsior finished second in 3:26.28 and Papine ended third in 3:22.49.
Calabar tallied 481 points to top the boys as defending champions Kingston College (KC) were second with 377 while Jamaica College 225, Wolmer’s Boys 162 and Excelsior High 102 closed out the top five.
Defending champions Excelsior High retained their girls’ title by amassing 342 points. Second went to Wolmer’s 247 while closing out the top five were Queen’s 246, Immaculate 218 and St Andrew High 189.
C’BAR DOMINANT
Earlier Calabar also dominated the 400m with Taylor leading the way in Class One and Evaldo Whitehorne topping Class Two.
In a ver y competitive race, Taylor had to stave off the strong challenge of KC ’s Dashawn Morris winning in a record 45.84 seconds. Morris also went sub46, clocking a personal best 45.93. Chambers of Calabar finished third in a new best of 46.99. All three went under the old record of 48.36 set in 2016.
Whitehorne was very impressive with a new mark of 47.41 to defeat KC’s Shantamoi Brown, 48.54. Rasheim Williams of Wolmer’s Boys was third in 49.78.
Lavaughn Douglas of Calabar made it a clean sweep of the one lap event by taking Class Three in 49.81
There were also record runs in the Class Two and Class One 400m hurdles. In Class Two KC’s Brown won in 52.66. Calabar’s Andre Leslie, 52.97, and Dean Clarke (53.51) ended second and third respectively. The old mark was 57.02 set by KC’s Davion Williams last year.
James-King’s great form in the event continued with his record run of 51.01 in Class One. Phillip Lemonious of JC was second in 51.44 with third going to Nicquaine Henry of Calabar in 52.71.
St Andrew High’s girls were also in record breaking form at the meet. They had two record runs in the Class One and Two 400m. Kelly Ann Downer took Class One in 55.24 while Janielle Josephs won Class Two in n 55.15. Joseph also won the Class Two 200m in 24.62.
In the girls’ short sprints Alpha High’s Rihanna Archer won the Class One 100m i n 12.11, Hughasia Fyffe of Immaculate took Class Two in 12.95 while Class Three was won by Excelsior’s Amoya McFarlane in 12.95.
