CWI launches Antigua, Barbuda leg of Women’s World T20
ICC WOMEN’S World T20 (Twenty20) Cup director Jennifer Nero said yesterday that the West Indies’ hosting of the event will hopefully allow the region to achieve sustainable development through gender balanced sports programmes.
Nero was speaking at the official announcement, at Government House here on Friday evening, that Antigua and Barbuda will be one of three hosts for the tournament which runs from November 2 to 25 this year. The other hosts are St Lucia and Guyana.
“Our vision is to bring the unique Caribbean colour, entertainment and flamboyance to women’s cricket by successfully hosting this standalone Women’s World T20 tournament,” she said. “As the defending champions, we aim to use the tournament as a springboard to attract more children and women to the game and maintain a positive global momentum around women’s cricket. Cricket West Indies will use this event to promote gender equality in the region through cricket; to discover new champions for women’s cricket; to establish cricket as a genuine career option for young girls; to provide a legacy for women and girls’ cricket throughout the region; and to re-engage the Windies fans.”
This is the first time that the ICC Women’s World T20 will be hosted as a standalone event, meaning the competition will not be hosted at the same time and by the same host nation as the men’s version of the tournament.
