Jesus elevated status of women
THE EDITOR, Sir:
AMERICAN BAPTIST pastor Steven Anderson is still stuck on biblical ‘law’, as suggested by his comments in the Sunday Gleaner lead story of February 25, 2018.
When Jesus, Moses, Elijah and the three disciples met on the Mount of Olives – the Bible story of the Transfiguration, Father God spoke: “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!” Not to any of the others present at that time.
Jesus emancipated women from the past slavish mentality and treatments. For example, when the woman anointed His feet prior His crucifixion, He rebuked her criticisers, saying, “Leave her alone.”
Jesus allowed a woman forbidden to be in public and to touch a rabbi, moreover who was bleeding for years, to touch Him and He made her well.
‘LET HIM THAT HAS NO SIN...’
A woman was alleged to have been caught in the very act of adultery and was surrounded with men ready with stones in their hands to stone her to death. What did Jesus do? He defended her, saying, “Let him that has no sin cast the first stone.” And there are many more such stories of how Jesus elevated women.
Jesus upgraded womenfolk, giving us equal opportunities alongside men. Therefore, nothing is out of place with women becoming prime ministers, pastors, principals, and presidents. We are the ones who brought both sexes on the entire face of the earth in all generations.
I congratulate the Revs Christine Gooden Benguche (Methodists), the Rev Phyllis Smith (Moravians), and especially the Rev Karen Kirlew (Baptists), who have been elected to lead their denominations.
Jesus liberated women in His time here on earth and as He is the head of the Church.
