Take stand against crime crisis

- CANDIS CRAIG

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE ARE in a crisis. The murder rate in Jamaica is at an all-time high. The criminals in our midst are drunk on their own power and see no need to skulk about and conduct their nefarious activities in the dark of night.

Despite the fear these criminals have driven into our hearts, they are in the minority and each of us has to take a stand and stop spouting blame from one side of the fence to the other and making this into a political problem when it is a national problem.

We all must take some responsibility for where we are today, and each of us has to take action to get our country back. We have to stop coming up with solutions that we only enunciate in private conversations and speak up publicly and get these ideas out to our elected leaders.

This present crisis did not manifest overnight, and the solution will take time. Let us not be the generation that our children will look back on in shame and say, “But you were there, what did you do?”

Take today to start your plan to help the education of a child– and not just paying school fees, but really seeing how that child is faring and coping socially so that he or she can participate fully in society.

Take today to reach out to your l ocal male or female councillor and see how you can help their efforts in an area that you are passionate about.
