Mahfood edges Joseph in Tastee Clays

AMERICAN I NTERNATION­AL School of Kingston’s (AISK) Peter Mahfood clipped Campion College’s Matthew Joseph 62-61 in a closely contested super six shoot-off in the inaugural Tastee Inter-School Clay Shooting Challenge at the Jamaica Skeet Club to claim his first local win yesterday. Meanwhile, H illel Academy (217 points) edged Campion College by six points for their eighth successive title.

Mahfood and Joseph came into the final station of the shoot-off tied on 57 points. But it was t he AISK student who topped the final station 5-4 to claim the overall individual prize.

“It ( competitio­n) was stiff. Everyone shot three or four birds lower (on 50 target), so it was a little relieving because I was way ahead of some people, so I stressed less,” Mahfood told The Gleaner.

However, he thought the deciding factor was the fact that Joseph shot after him at the final station. Neverthele­ss he said that he was ‘glad’ to win, his first title, and aspires to compete with the big boys of the sport.

WINDIES WOMEN lost by the narrowest of margins, one run, to the New Zealand White Ferns in the first oneday internatio­nal (ODI) of the ICC Women’s Championsh­ips at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln University.

Captain Stafanie Taylor won the toss for the Windies Women and sent New Zealand in to bat first.

The White Ferns got a solid start from their most experience­d pair, in Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates. This pair posted a 76-run partnershi­p before Bates fell for 44, caught behind off Hayley Matthews. Devine carried on, sharing a 60-run partnershi­p with Amy Satterthwa­ite and then 63 with Katey Martin. Devine reached her third ODI century before she fell for 108 off 103 balls.

The White Ferns’ middle order found it difficult to score as freely as the top order. New Zealand finishing their innings on 278/9 from their 50 overs.

The Windies Women had a tight bowling attack, led by Taylor, who finished with -/54, followed by Afy Fletcher with 3-55 and Hayley Matthews 2-68.

In their reply, Windies Women lost their first wicket with the score on 31, when Hayley Matthews was bowled by Holly Huddleston for 18.

Kycia Knight and Taylor then consolidat­ed, in a 57-run partnershi­p, before Kycia was trapped leg before wicket for 38.

Taylor was then j oined by Chedean Nation, and the two Jamaicans rebuilt the Windies innings with a 64-run partnershi­p. Taylor reached her 30th half-century, then Nation fell for 29.

Deandra Dottin and Britney Cooper played short cameos of 11 and nine, respective­ly, with the skipper.

Meanwhile, Hillel, champions since 2010, won three out of the nine classes to retain the championsh­ip. Alexander Clarke captured the first event of the morning, the Sub Junior D class, with a shot of 24.

Ryan Lue also took the Sub Junior C class with 39, ahead of teammate Noel Azan with 31.

One of the t wo female categories also went to Hillel, with Christina Changpong (32) winning the Girls B Class, ahead of teammate Taylor Phillips. However, St Andrew’s Savannah Miller (35) stopped Anna Issa for the Girls A crown.

Overall champion Mahfood also topped the Junior A category, while Adam Fletcher won the Junior B section and Keith Murray, the Junior C Class.

Taylor soldiered on, taking on the bad deliveries and quick singles when the chances arose. She fell for a valiant 90 with the Windies still 64 runs short of victory.

Merissa Aguilleira then joined Kyshonna Knight at the wicket and rotated the strike regularly. However, Aguilleira fell for a wellplayed 20.

Afy Fletcher and Kyshonna had a mix-up in the middle that saw Fletcher run out for two.

Tremayne Smartt made three, as Shamilia Connell and Kyshonna Knight had four to make off the last ball.

Connell connected with a shot straight back but could only get two as the Windies Women lost by one run.

Windies Women finished on 277/9 from 50 overs. Leigh Kasperek, Holly Huddleston and Amelia Kerr had two wickets each for the White Ferns.
