...CALABAR, EDWIN ALLEN EXPECTED TO SHOW STRENGTH AT DIGICEL GP FINALE
THE ISSA/GRACEKENNEDY Boys and Girls’ Championships is just two weeks away, but today inside the National Stadium fans are i n store for some special performances as they will get a sneak preview, with several top high school athletes clashing in the Digicel Grand Prix finale, the GC Foster Classics, starting at 8:30 a.m. The Grand Prix finals get started at 4:30 p.m. Without question, the boys’ Class One 400 metres event will attract a lot of attention, as Corporate Area champion, Christopher Taylor of Calabar, and runner-up, Dashawn Morris of Kingston College, will renew their rivalry in what is expected to be a mega clash.
At the Corporate Area Championships, Taylor, who has run things in the event as a schoolboy for the past few seasons, had a big scare and had to dig deep to deny Morris.
Both athletes went under 46 seconds, as Taylor stopped the clock at 45.84 seconds, just ahead of Morris – 45.93 seconds.
Since then, Morris has gone on to defeat two of Taylor ’s teammates in Anthony Carpenter and Shemar Chambers at the recent Carifta Trials. Morris, who was some ways off the pace, showed an excellent turn of speed in the last 50 metres to overhaul Carpenter near the finish line to win i n 46.01 seconds.
Carpenter took second place in a personal best of 46.19 seconds, with World Youth champion Antonio Watson of Petersfield High running third in a new personal best 46.45 seconds.
Both Taylor and Morris will be seeking a psychological advantage going into Champs, but a victory for Morris here could put panic in the Calabar camp, as Taylor is the flagbearer here and will be relied upon for big points during Champs.
The likes of St Jago High Anthony Cox, and Odane Smith of Bridgeport, should all make this even more interesting.
