Edwin Allen ready to start points rush

DANIELLE SLOLEY looks poised to secure the first medal on the girls’ side of the ISSA-GraceKenne­dy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championsh­ips for Immaculate Conception High School in today’s Class Two girls shot put final at 5:30 p.m., at the National Stadium.

Sloley threw a distance of 14.44m on day one, yesterday, just 0.29m short of the 14.73m, which won her last year’s title. Next best was last year’s silver medallist Aliesha Shaw of Rusea’s High, who threw 13.98m, followed by Vere Technical’s Marie Forbes, who had a distance of 13.60m. Edwin Allen’s Daniella Williams (12.62m) and St Jago High’s Abbigail Parchment (12.61m) rounded out the top five qualifiers.

In the other flight, Keliesha Shaw of Ru sea’ s qualified with13.09m, followed by Deon Burley of Petersfiel­d High, (12.86m) and Santornya R alliford of Holmwood Tech ni cal(12.35m ). St Andrew’ s Celine F al coner(11.85m) and West wood H igh’s Shanae Blake (11.74m) rounded out the first flight’s top five.

Defending girls champions Edwin Allen will look to claim their first event when Fiona Richards contests the Class One girls discus throw final at 5:05 p.m.

Richards’ throw of 43.94m topped the list of competitor­s in yesterday’s preliminar­y round, as Shamella Donaldson (43.66m) of Rusea’s was next best, while Tamara Thompson of Holmwood had the third farthest mark, with43.63m. Later in the day, Petersfiel­d’s Shaquena Foote produced a standout performanc­e in the girls’ Class Two 800m, producing a time of 2:07.91 from the opening heat. Defending champion Cemore Donald of Edwin Allen High will be hard to beat and duly secured her spot with the second best time of the round 2:16.58, followed by Holmwood’s Daniella Deer, 2:19.50.

Hydel High’s Oneka Wilson topped the list of qualifiers in the Class Three girls’ 80m hurdles, clocking 11.54 seconds. St Jago’s Danae Nembhard had the second best time with 11.60 seconds. Atalya Wallace of Holmwood had the third overall fastest time of 11.71 seconds.

HYDEL IN THE MIX

In the Class Four Girls’ 70m hurdles, Hydel’s Stephanie Griffiths was fastest with 10.91 seconds. Holmwood’s Orianna Barnett was the next best overall with a time of 10.97 seconds. St Jago’s Seanna-gaye Leslie’s 11.02 seconds was the third fastest overall time.

Today ’s events get star ted at 8:30 a.m. with the Class Four girls long Jump preliminar­y round, where Central Championsh­ips winner Brianna Watt of Edwin Allen and St Jago’s Jade Ann Dawkins, as well as Alliah Baker of Hydel, are the ones to watch in the event.

The girls class one shot put will also be contested today, as well as the preliminar­y round of the 1,500m over classes one to three.

However, the main event of the day will come in the 4x100m relays over all f our classes being featured, starting at 6:25 p.m.
