Captain Morris targets KC success
TASKED WITH captaining the famed Purples of North Street, quarter-miler Dashawn Morris has embraced his role as team leader and believes Kingston College’s quiet approach to this season helps their 2018 ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships cause.
“This team is motivated by the fact that we are not favourites this year because we did not compete in many meets. There is a fighting spirit in this team, which I think can help us cause an upset,” said Morris.
Morris has described this season as steady, as he is one of two Class One competitors who have dipped below the 46 - seconds barrier, Calabar ’s Christopher Taylor being the other.
The modest Morris was quick to downplay thoughts on standing atop the podium, but still remains confident.
STACKED FIELD
“I’m a confident athlete and I know I can do it. It is going to be a very stacked field, so I am not taking anything for granted,” said Morris as he sat with The Gleaner at The Byron Bachelor Athletics Complex on the school’s Melbourne campus in the build-up to Champs.
Morris will lend his service to both relays as he and his teammates push for the school’s 32nd hold on the Mortimer Geddes trophy, which has managed to elude them since 2009.
When asked what it would mean to lift the title, Morris had only a few words.
“It would mean a lot, that’s all I can say,” shared the final-year student-athlete.
