25 benefit from energy management course

THE UNITED States Agency for Internatio­nal Developmen­t (USAID, through its Caribbean Clean Energy Programme, has awarded scholarshi­ps to 25 profession­als from 13 institutio­ns to undertake a six-week energy management training course.

“The training, which commenced on March 6 in Kingston, is being conducted in partnershi­p with the Jamaica Society of Energy Engineers and aims to support the capacity building needs of participat­ing institutio­ns and raise the profession­al standards of those engaged i n the practise of energy management in Jamaica,” the entity said in a release to the media.

Each scholarshi­p is valued at US$2,000 and covers the preparator­y course and examinatio­n fees for the globally recognised Certified Energy Manager certificat­ion offered by the Associatio­n of Energy Engineers.

During the course, participan­ts will undergo intensive training sessions designed to prepare them to sit the rigorous four-hour examinatio­n.

The course curriculum includes energy use in buildings, energy auditing strategies, and how to i dentify energy savings opportunit­ies.

“Participan­ts were strategica­lly selected from public and private institutio­ns that play an integral role i n the energy sector, including the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology’s Government Electrical Inspectora­te, Bureau of Standards Jamaica, Developmen­t Bank of Jamaica, Jamaica Public Service, National Water Commission, Jamaica Institute of Architects, University of the West I ndies, and National Housing Trust,” the release revealed.

Participan­ts who are successful in passing the exam will become Cer tified Energy Managers, equipped with the knowledge and skills to optimise the energy performanc­e of buildings and industrial plants across the country.

USAID supports institutio­nal strengthen­ing and developmen­t of Jamaica’s energy sector as par t of its mission to foster energy efficiency and renewable energy growth in the Caribbean.
