WEEK 10 ROUND-UP

YL: SCHOOLS’ CHALLENGE QUIZ

-

EXCITEMENT, SORROW and shock were just a few of the emotions that pervaded the studios of TVJ during the quarter-final matches and at the end, defending champions Munro College have been eliminated. So, too, the number-one-seeded team, Titchfield High.

Last Tuesday marked the start of the quarter-finals of this season’s Schools’ Challenge Quiz. In front of a packed studio, Titchfield High went up against the number-nine-seeded Old Harbour High.

As the audience watched in silence, the Titchfield team took the lead of the opening round of the contest, ending on seven while Old Harbour only managed to secure four points.

Titchfield would continue to lead through the speed section, thus expanding their lead over the Old Harbour team. Titchfield secured an additional 16 points, bringing their score at the end of the speed section to 23 points. Old Harbour on the other hand, answered correctly only seven from the speed round and ended the round on a total of 11 points.

It was now time for the buzzer section which would, of course, determine the winner. It was in this round that the Old Harbour team pulled together all they had and went for the win. Old Harbour High took control of the buzzers and before you could say ‘a who deh yah’, they were up on the Titchfield team, and in this moment the tables turned. Like many before them, Titchfield High panicked under the pressure and began losing points, but the Old Harbour team remained calm throughout and after the final bell, it was Old Harbour High who had booked their spot in the semi-finals and still has a chance to become the 2018 champions.

MATCH TWO OF THE QUARTER-FINALS

An extremely close contest took place between defending champions Munro College and the number-four-seeded team, St Jago High.

The match started out quite slow, which was unusual for both teams. At the end of the opening round, Munro and St Jago were tied on three points each. The teams took advantage of the speed section to gather over 15 points each. At the end of the speed section, Munro had taken a onepoint lead with 22 points, while St Jago ended on 21 points.

The final round of the contest had the audience on edge, as you could feel the nervousness emitting from many. Both teams battled throughout the buzzer section with no one team having the lead for too long. Both team remained calm and produced a nail-biting end to a close match; but in the end, it was St Jago that held the lead until the sound of the final bell.

OTHER QUARTER-FINAL CONTEST

The other two matches of the quarter-finals were quite interesting. Campion College and Kingston College played in match number three, with Campion winning that match with 35 points, eight points more than Kingston College’s 27 points.

The final quarter-final match, and one of the most nervewracking, took place between the impressive team from Manchester High and Ardenne High. Manchester High went into the final round of the match on 33 points, 11 points ahead of Ardenne, but like the team from Titchfield, Manchester High failed to remain calm and Ardenne, one of the team that knows how to keep their composure, used the opportunity to win the match. The final scores read Ardenne on 35 points and Manchester High on 29 points.

In the much-anticipated semifinals, Old Harbour High will meet St Jago High, while Champion College will go up against Ardenne High.
