Tomorrow is deadline for voters’ list registration

-

THE ELECTORAL Office of Jamaica (EOJ ) is reminding individuals that the deadline to register for the next voters’ list is tomorrow. Persons intending to have their names added to this list, which will be published on May 31, must apply at an EOJ constituency office before the cutoff date. Persons who meet the March 29 deadline should expect to receive their ID cards by mid-June.

Electors who register after March 29 will have to wait to be added to the November 30, 2018 list.

The registration process is simple and applicants are asked to come prepared to have their photographs and fingerprints taken. Following the in-office application, the applicant’s residence will be verified and the application processed.

Individuals who are already registered to vote do not need to reapply. However, the EOJ is encouraging registered electors who have changed address to visit their constituency office and apply for a transfer of registration. This will ensure that the elector’s information on the voters’ list remains up to date.

While registration is continuous, the ECJ updates the voters’ list every six months, on May 31 and November 30 of each year. The cut-off date for each list is two months prior to publication, to facilitate processing of applicants.

The voters’ list now stands at 1,905,278, as published on November 30, 2017. To be eligible for registration, you must be a Jamaican or Commonwealth citizen, at least 18 years of age, and must be ordinarily resident in Jamaica for at least 12 months prior to registration.
