Champs organisers still have work to do

THE EDITOR, Sir: OUR BOYS and Girls’ Athletics Championships cannot be bested as the supreme event of its kind internationally.

But there are still some things that need to be addressed, including the mystery of disappearing tickets that reappear later at twice the price, before the organisers can truly claim that the management is worldclass.

On Thursday, I tried to get to Liguanea from downtown. Traffic was not moving on South Camp Road, so I turned and tried Mountain View. That was worse. It took me an hour and 45 minutes. The explanation I got from a traffic police was: “Is Champs”.

If one decides to spend the day at Champs and there is an emergency requiring one to leave the premises, one cannot re-enter on the same ticket.

Seats in the grandstand area are extremely uncomfortable after sitting for three hours.

The l ast time I attended Champs, I reached the Bob Marley statue after a torturous journey from the parking lot. Traffic came to a halt for the umpteenth time as someone had spread a cloth with what looked like Rasta memorabilia for sale almost at the feet of two senior cops, ‘in the middle road’.

I called my nephew, who I just learned had attended and was in the bleachers, to offer him a lift. He said he was with his friends. After Champs, they had walked and were soon at an after-Champs party in HalfWay Tree. I was still in my car at Bob Marley’s statue looking at the memorabilia and the policemen. Waiting.

Come on, organisers. You have work to do.
