Ja bow into action at Commonweal­th Games

JAMAICA WILL bow into action in the 2018 Commonweal­th Games today (Thursday, Australia time).

The Jamaican athletes will compete in six sports on the opening day of competitio­n in Gold Coast, Australia. The national contingent will compete in netball, badminton, triathlon, squash, lawn bowls and women’s basketball.

Jamaica’s netballers who will compete out of Group A, will face Fuji in their opening game tonight at 10 p.m. (Gold Coast time is 15 hours ahead of Jamaica) before facing the tough South Africans in their second match on Friday.

However, Jamaica first competitio­n on the day will be in the mixed badminton, where the team comprising Alana Bailey, Dennis Coke, Anthony McNee, Samuel Ricketts and Katherine Wynter, will go up against Singapore at 6 p.m.. They are also down to face Mauritius later that same day in their second game.

Triathlete­s Llori Sharpe and Phillip McCatty will also be on show for Jamaica in their respective finals. Sharpe will compete at 6:31 p.m. and McCatty at 10 p.m.

National men’s squash champion Chris Binnie will also be in action. He will face Jason Doyle of St Vincent and Grenadines at 11:30 p.m after Lewis Walters opposes Peter Creed of Wales at 9:30 p.m. The women’s basketball team will also play their first game on Thursday (Ja time) at 3:33 a.m. They take on India in Pool B.

In men’s lawn bowls Jamaica’s Andrew Newell and Mervyn Edwards will go up against Northern Ireland in round one at 1 a.m. Thursday (Ja time).
