IT IS interesting how industrial designers develop the concepts for manufactured products such as cars, home and electronic appliances, sporting goods, toys, and more. For Michael Bonnick, working in a range of industries, combining art, business, and engineering to improve systems and make products that people use every day is an awesome experience.

According to Bonnick, a highly experienced industrial designer and training professional with a more than 20 years international career in the creative industries sector, industrial designers play a significant role in today’s innovation economy, as they bring creative lens to approach complex problems or challenge.

“Industrial designers are responsible for the look of many of the products bought, used and consumed every day. It is our job to create, plan and style manufactured goods while considering the usability, ergonomics and aesthetics of items. We work to improve the design, function, engineering and marketing of these items,” Bonnick said.

“We put innovation at the heart of our process by applying the principles of user-centred design to solve the clients’ problems.”

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Industrial design is a combination of art and engineering, drawing skills, creativity and technical knowledge. Industrial designers must have a good sense of colour, balance and proportion, as well as good verbal, visual and written communication skills.

Some industrial designers usually choose to work on products in a specific industry, such as the medical, automobile, or technology industry. Successful designers know how to combine art and engineering, and incorporate sustainability, usability and aesthetics. An understanding of marketing, quality assurance, and project management can be helpful for an industrial designer to attract more clients.

Bonnick’s recent return to Jamaica from the United Kingdom has sparked much of the industrial designer’s innate passion to provide solutions for everyday living and issues which impact the broader society.

USER-CENTRED DESIGN

Having worked across North America, Europe and the Caribbean, Bonnick has started MELB Design Studio Ltd, a dynamic creative company focused on providing innovative solutions for local and international clients.

“We help you tackle the ongoing processes, business decisions and strategies that enable innovation, and create effectively designed products, services, communications, environments, and brands that enhance your quality of life and provide organisational success,” Bonnick said.

He noted that their understanding of what drives the success of services and products across various sectors put them in an excellent position to help clients achieve their business goals.

“We put innovation at the heart of our process by applying the principles of user-centred design to solve the clients’ problems. We start with the customer’s point of view to create a solution that works for you,” he said.
