FOLLOWING ON the successes of last year’s Curvy Caribbean Conference, conceptualiser Alisia Jarrett has launched the first-ever Miss Curvy Jamaica, which will be one of the major highlights of this year’s staging.
Since the conference was birthed to inspire and motivate full-figured women to love themselves and boost their self-confidence, the Miss Curvy Jamaica seemed like the next step. This is a pageant that will show that curvy is beautiful too. At the end of the competition, Jarrett wants young women looking on to be able to say, “I am beautiful and I am worthy, no matter my size or my shape”.
“I simply want to change how we see beauty and how we value ourselves,” Jarrett told Flair.
The 17 Miss Curvy Jamaica contestants will showcase their talents while vying for the coveted crown between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m on the evening of the 28th.
This is, however, not a one-day competition to glorify curves, as Miss Curvy Jamaica 2018 will have a year of projects that she will be expected to execute. These include presentations at schools and clubs, events and organisations to share the message of self-love and acceptance. She will also receive over $300,000 in cash and prizes.
The location of this year’s event is Campion College Auditorium, which Jarrett is looking forward to, as she believes the size would be perfect for the competition.
NETWORKING SPACE
The Curvy Caribbean Conference was designed for full-figured women, size 14 and upwards, to have a space that caters to them – to be able to network with beautiful curvy women like themselves, as well as ‘shop till they drop’ without reservation.
There are a few other things that Jarrett believes that guests should look forward to for this year’s conference, like the clothing by designers Minka and Angella Wilkinson of Safidah, who will feature their plus size lines for the first time at the conference.
“Simone Gordon of T and T Fashions will be launching her new plus size line at the conference, called Curvy Love. It will be featured in the Ultimate Curvy Fashion Show Saturday afternoon and will be modelled by the contestants,” Jarrett added.
There is also the Reggae Dance Class. “We also have a new Reggae Dance Class teacher, curvy diva, Krysta ‘Fluffy Krissy’ Anderson. Yendi Phillipps was our teacher last year, but this year, Yendi will be one of our judges in the Miss Curvy Jamaica pageant,” she added.
Popular brother-and-sister team, Duane and Teasea Bennett of Reve Jewellery, will be making their debut as emcees for the two-day event.
Jarrett was unable to single out any one booth which she considered a must-see. But as for sessions, while it was difficult for her to pick one, she gave some suggestions.
“The Focus on Your Health, Not Weight with Elizabeth Terry of Limitless Transformation is very dear to me. I have had personal success with Elizabeth’s NLP programme. Elizabeth is a neurolinguistic programming trainer and coach. She will blow your mind,” she told Flair. She also mentioned Styling Your Curves with Teasea Bennett, Makeup Tutorial with Dawn Lindo of D’Marie Institute, and Building Your Confidence.
The conference will be held April 28 through 29.
