Schoolwork mixed with excitement and giveaways

- YOUTHLINK WRITER

THE GLEANER’S Youthlink hosted the 17th staging of its annual CSEC seminar, primarily to tackle the challenging topics that students may face in the upcoming examination period. This year, the five-part session commenced in Savanna-la-Mar, and moved to Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Mandeville, before ending at The Mico University College in Kingston. Traditionally, each seminar starts with an English language session in the morning. Students then break for lunch and return for the math session, which keeps them locked in until it is time to leave.

This year did not open in the manner the Youtlink team had expected, as only one school showed up for the session in Savanna-laMar where only a few Grange Hill High students took part in the day’s activities. However, seminar

instructors Karen Young-Miller (English) and Howard Atkins (math) did not allow that to detract from their sessions. They executed their humorous interactions and detailed presentations without a hitch.

On the other hand, the following segment in Montego Bay saw a very large turnout from schools within that area. A whopping 216 students showed up from Mount Alvenia High alone. This made it somewhat unfair when it was time for the daily giveaways; they swept up almost everything.

The western session ended on a cool and relaxed day in Ochi Rios, with Mrs Leng filling in for Mrs Young-Miller. It was not all work and no play, however, as during the lunch break there was excitement and giveaways; a few reps from The Gleaner Company got involved.

FLOW, this year’s sponsor, also added to the festivities by allowing participating students to win call credit and smartphones.
