Delighted and disappointed
Mixed emotions for Foster after Portmore’s RSPL title win
AT THE end of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) final at the National Stadium on Monday night, Portmore United striker Maalique Foster was a picture of ambivalence.
The forward admitted to feeling both delight and a bit of disappointment at the final whistle.
Foster was overjoyed after Portmore won the Premier League title after their third consecutive trip to the final, having outlasted Waterhouse in a 4-3 penalty shootout win, which followed a 0-0 scoreline after regulation and extra time. However, the diminutive attacker was disappointed that injury restricted his contribution to his team’s success.
The ankle injury he received from the first-leg semi-final against Cavalier made life difficult for the attacker, who told The Gleaner that he was hoping to have a big say in the league decider.
“It’s a team sport and I am proud that my team was able to do it without me really. I just want to say thank you to my team for a job well done. I was a little disappointed because I had it in my mind to go out and score a goal in the final and help my team to victory, but the injury got me out, so that was disappointing,” Foster said.
Even though Foster netted just four times this season, his overall contribution to Portmore’s success was certainly valuable, and he was delighted to finally get his hand on the RSPL trophy after two previous defeats in the final.
PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE
“It’s just words come to pass. We said this would be the year, and we came out and executed, so we deserve it,” he said. “Thank God for the win. I am pleased with my performance this year, and next year will be better. So, hopefully, I will come back stronger next season as well.”
Foster, who recently made his debut for Jamaica’s national team, is now looking beyond the RSPL and is hoping that he will get an opportunity to ply his trade overseas.
“I hope to get a contract so I can go overseas to play football. That’s the aim,” said Foster.
The 21-year-old made his international debut earlier this year in a friendly international against South Korea, scoring from distance to earn a 2-2 draw for the Reggae Boyz.
