Windward Road take charge at INSPORTS All-Age and Junior High Champs
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Windward Road and Junior High School are on course to defend their INSPORTS All-Age and Junior High Athletics Championships title, going into today’s final day of competition at the National Stadium.
Windward Road lead the standings with 121 points and are followed by rivals John Mills, who are on 106 points. They are followed by Constant Spring 103, Shortwood 75, and Calabar 54.
Oral Whilby, coach of Windward Road, who are seeking their fifthstraight lien on the title, said he is confident of completing the victory.
“I am very elated with the performance of my team because this is the first time that we have managed to lead the competition going into the final day,” said Whilby. “I think we have done very well despite the number of injuries that we have, and so I am very happy about that.
“We are very strong in the relays, and so we are looking to garner a lot of points to ensure that we win this championships,” Whilby said.
Christopher Crawford from Windward Road won the boys’ Class One 100m in 11.70 seconds ahead of Elton Hyatt of Constant Spring (11.81) and Giovonni Taylor of Shortwood (11.97).
Crawford is favoured to win his second gold medal of the championships as he enters the 200m final with the fastest time of 24.50 seconds.
Kimmoy Brown of John Mills captured the girls’ Class One 100m in 13.50, ahead of Shadai Prince of Windward Road (13.91), while Tyice Richards of Calabar was third in 14.14 seconds.
HIGH JUMP GLORY
John Mills’ Leopaul Foster was successful in the boys’ high jump Open event with a mark of 1.70m.
John Mills took gold and silver in the girls’ shot put Open as Shaniel Allen won the event with a mark of 8.17m ahead of her teammate, Chevanne Thompson, (7.97m), while Cockburn Gardens’ Sonya Watson won the bronze with a mark of 7.74m.
The winning school will take home $150,000, with the runnersup pocketing $100,000 and the third-place finishers taking home $70,000. Each of the participating teams will receive $50,000.
