To everyday living

FOR FUNCTIONAL porcelain pieces and handmade lighting fixtures, Baughaus Design Studios has a new line of dynamic and exotic pieces that will add character to your everyday life. Their latest pieces were inspired by the Rastafarian and other prominent aspects of Jamaican culture.

“I believe that we have ‘cultural gold’ and as such, it is our birthright to tell our story, instead of having others tell it for us or

benefiting from our heritage,” said owner and creative lead Dana Baugh.

Shortly after returning from design school, Dana started working on a concept for an Asian restaurant. While working on the designs, it dawned on her that Jamaica has a cultural icon that should be treated in the same way the world treats Buddha. She began focusing on authentic handmade products for the home and heart infused with Jamaican roots and culture.

The company was registered in 2012, but officially started operations in 2016.

“It started as a side hustle while working full-time in the hospitality industry. I did it nights, weekends and public holidays to build product line, website, social media, etc. Pretty much by myself with some guidance from others,” said Baugh.

Baughaus Designs decided to celebrate the positive messages associated with Rastafari by introducing ‘The Wise Rasta’ to their collection. Other additions to the line include new hand-built porcelain lighting pieces, which is an abstraction of shapes with a midcentury, modern-luxe vibe.

Baugh is driven by her love for art and culture.

“Ideas are always coming to me, because how can you not be inspired by Jamaica and its people? Travel and experiencing other cultures, helps to feed my creative lifeline, along with reading and having an open mind,” explained Baugh.

Outlook got a sneak peek into what’s next for Baughaus Designs.

“Let me let you in on what is coming down the pipeline ... asoon-to-be-released honeycomb honey dipper (made from porcelain), a very delicate and ornate teapot set, inspired by one of our national symbols and new pieces for Independence, which I know a lot of people will be excited about, because I can’t wait to make it,” exclaimed Baugh.
