Transparency and accountability, please

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AFTER READING Raymond Pryce’s column several times and the letters from Orrette Fisher, I am flabbergasted that the prime minister and the leader of the opposition have not called an urgent meeting to discuss a way forward.

I disagree with the chairman and independent commissioners who all seem to believe that this is part of the parry and thrust of politics. Maybe for political elites it is, but for us everyday Jamaicans without access to political power, this is a serious threat to the incremental progress we have made to secure fundamental components of our democracy.

This is even more startling when placed against other recent concerns such as the lack of compliance with national policy as it concerns the Heroes Circle public private/partnership issues.

SECRECY CREEPING IN

Add to the mix the issue of the post-Cabinet briefings and a disturbing picture of creeping secrecy, lack of transparency, accountability and inclusion of the wider civil society in various decision-making arenas, and what you have is a model environment for corruption to thrive.

We cannot continue with more bleeding from our public services due to the ineffective and inefficient use of funds and misuse of funds. It is the poor in whose name every government claims to act who is suffering the most.
