Corporate Recycle Challenge gets going next week
FIVE LOCAL companies will participate in an upcoming Recycle Challenge to collect a minimum of 100,000 plastic bottles over seven weeks.
The challenge will be launched next Monday by Wisynco ECO, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Wisynco Group. At that time, the participants will be revealed.
“We wanted to help people build good recycling habits and we wanted to reach out to corporate Jamaica to get their employees and staff involved in building these habits, while also bringing awareness to our waste management issues on the island,” noted Shelly-Ann Dunkley, environment communication officer with Wisynco, of their motivation.
The Challenge, she said, is a “call to action” to embrace the long-held Wisynco sentiment that “recycling plastic feels fantastic”.
It comes at a time of growing consumption of plastics – polyethylene terephthalate, such as water bottles, and highdensity polyethylene, including detergent and motor oil bottles.
Over two years, Wisynco ECO’s efforts at recycling, through its schools’ programme alone, have yielded the collection of more than three million such plastic bottles.
“Everybody needs to know what is happening, where they can recycle, and we want to make it easier for them,” Dunkley said.
Participating companies will be provided with cages for the collection of the plastics.
“The cages are placed at their facilities and everybody is able to drop off their bags. Recycling Partners of Jamaica will do the collection,” the communication officer noted.
“Public awareness is something that Wisynco is vested in. As one of the largest bottlers of bottled beverages in the island, Wisynco also has a vested interest in promoting recycling and, as part of our corporate social responsibility, we support fully,” she added.
