The following events took place on May 30 in the years identified:

1952: Hugh Foote pays a visit to the Caribbean Preserving Company plant on Spanish Town Road and finds the industry a very interesting and exciting development. Foote is met by R.W. Youngman and Major T.J. Hallinan, directors of the company. The question of sugar in relation to the plant is discussed. Commenting on the visit, Foote states that the expansion of the canning industry is one of the most important and encouraging things that has happened in Jamaica in the past few years. He also states that the canning industry greatly increases our exports and provides employment for hundreds of workers.

1979: Jamaica Broilers Ltd, the island’s largest poultry-processing company, acquires for US $1.5 million, the total control of Central Soya of Jamaica Ltd, a poultry and animal feed mill in which it had 45% interest. Announcing this, David Wildish, managing director of Jamaica Broilers, says that with the acquisition of the remaining 55% interest, Central Soya is now wholly owned by Jamaica Broilers. He says the acquisition is made possible through the help of R. Danny Williams, minister of industry and commerce, the Bank of Jamaica and Citibank NA, which provided the loan of US $1.5 million to consummate the deal. Central Soya of Jamaica, the island’s largest livestock feed mill, is a partnership between the parent company Central Soya of Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA, and Jamaica Broilers. The local feed mill produces in excess of 100,000 tons of animal feed a year.

1995: Lorenzo Ellis, councillor of the Maxfield Park Division of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC), stands to lose his seat because of failure to attend regular meetings. Information from Town Clerk Keith Osbourne reveals that Councillor Ellis has not attended a KSAC council meeting since January and that he has not taken any leave of absence from the KSAC.
