Hydel dominate at Tastee National Prep Champs
HYDEL PREPARATORY School outscored their opponents by more than 100 points to capture their 13th straight title at the JISA Tastee National Prep Champs at the National Stadium yesterday.
The Ferry-based school tallied 310 points, 115 more than the second-place team, Vaz Prep, with 195. Emmanuel Christian Academy were the third spot with 123 points.
Principal Ann Thompson-Bell said that this year’s victory is even more special as the school is celebrating its 25th anniversary. “It’s our 25th anniversary and, certainly, it has been a tremendous journey. It is really a special way to celebrate the milestone, “Thompson-Bell told The Sunday Gleaner.
Nine-year-old Alexia Latore led the way for Hydel with 25 points in the 8-9 age group, winning the 100m and 150m and placing second in the long jump.
Her overall performance was only bettered by 11-year-old Jounee Armstrong of Vaz Prep, who won three events to claim the Champion Girl title.
Armstrong won the long jump with a leap of 5.76m, the 100m in 12.90 seconds, and the 200m in 26.21 seconds.
On the boys’ side, Michael-Andre Edwards (9) of Emmanuel Christian and Edward Sterling (10) of Vaz both tallied 25 points in the hunt for the Champion Boy trophy.
Edwards won the 100m in 13. 66 seconds, broke the long jump record with a distance of 5.11m, and finished second in the 150m clocking 20.32 seconds, while Sterling won the 200m, 400m, and placed second in the high jump.
Several records were broken on the final day of the meet. Hydel broke their own record in the 4x100m for Class One girls with 50.64 seconds. The previous mark stood at 51.44 seconds.
Emmanuel Christian, with Edwards on anchor, broke the Class Two Boys 4x100m record by almost a second with their 53.03 effort. The record was held by Hydel at 54.00 seconds.
