DR CLIVE Lai, MBBS, DM (O&G), FACOG, was born and raised in Jamaica. He attended Jamaica College from 19681975, where he was involved in several extracurri­cular activities, including table tennis and Schools’ Challenge Quiz. He was president of the Hiking Club; and house captain for both Murray and Cowper houses. Lai’s ascendancy to these early positions of leadership was a prelude to greater things that he would achieve. He was accomplish­ed academical­ly from an early age as was evidenced when he became Spelling Bee champion of Jamaica in 1968.

After leaving JC, he enrolled at the University of the West Indies, where he obtained his doctorate in medicine (OB/GYN) in 1987.

Dr Lai is renowned in the medical fraternity and has held many positions in the field. He is president of the Medical Associatio­n of Jamaica.

Dr Lai has served the JC community for most of his adult life by giving of his financial resources and his time. For many years, he took time out to teach extra-lessons in maths at JC.

He has also served on several school and hospital boards, especially in the Mandeville area.

For his generosity in donating his time and resources for the developmen­t of his alma mater and the nation at large, Dr Lai will be honoured at this year’s staging of the Carlton Alexander Awards.

I Past chairman of Medical Staff of Hargreaves Memorial Hospital.

I Past member of the board of

Hargreaves Memorial Hospital.

I Member of the board of Mount St

Joseph Kinder-Prep School.

I Past member of the board of the Bishop Gibson High School for Girls.

I Past Parent-Teacher Associatio­n president for the Mt St Joseph Prep and Bishop Gibson High schools.

I National spell master and word master for The Gleaner’s Spelling Bee Competitio­n since 2004.

I Church elder and marriage officer at the Mandeville Bible Chapel. Lai accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour at Jamaica College while in sixth form.
