THE ANNUAL Carlton Alexander Awards Dinner remains a prominent event for the Jamaica College Old Boys’ Associatio­n (JCOBA). Each year during this event, we are privileged to honour two distinguis­hed alumni with the prestigiou­s Carlton

Alexander Award for

Excellence. This award symbolises the true essence of

Jamaica College and the JCOBA – to celebrate and secure the continued transforma­tion of the school into a first-class learning institutio­n, molding young men into thoughtful, well-rounded individual­s and leaders of our society.

Dr the Hon Selwyn Carlton D. Alexander was one such notable leader whose legacy and contributi­ons as one of Jamaica’s leading businessme­n in the field of commerce and industry are memorialis­ed through the annual recipients of his award. He portrayed a relentless commitment to Jamaica College that was exemplifie­d through his years of service as chairman of the school board and in his role as de facto chairman of what is now the Jamaica College Foundation. He created a platform and catalysed fundraisin­g

efforts to ensure that the institutio­n could flourish under its stewardshi­p.

Dr Alexander’s contributi­ons to Jamaica College provided the foundation that perseveres today for the holistic developmen­t of our young men for life. His personal and profession­al contributi­ons embody the importance of service and leadership, integral characteri­stics to cultivate and reward for our future leaders to emulate.

The 2018 honorees to be bestowed with this award for exemplifyi­ng leadership, accomplish­ment and status in their respective profession­al fields while having significan­t involvemen­t in their alma mater are Dr Clive Lai and Stephen Michael Shelton, Q.C., B.Sc. (Govt.), LLB (Hons.), FCI Arb.

TRUE REPRESENTA­TIONS

Dr Lai operates his own private practice in obstetrics and gynaecolog­y, having spent much of his career serving our major medical institutio­ns, such as the University Hospital of the West Indies, the Victoria Jubilee Hospital and Mandeville Regional Hospital, to name a few. Dr Lai has also served as an educator, providing extralesso­n services in mathematic­s for five years at Jamaica College and continuing today to serve within Mandeville, where he resides. He also serves as the president of the Medical Associatio­n of Jamaica.

Shelton has served proudly during his legal career in the high courts in Jamaica, Belize and the United Kingdom, the Court of Appeal in Jamaica and the Privy Council in the United Kingdom. He also served as chairman of the Council of Voluntary Social Services and on the school board of Jamaica College for twenty years. He is presently counsel at Myers, Fletcher & Gordon, Attorneys-at-Law, as well as the chairman of the Mental Health Review Board.

Both Dr Lai and Shelton are true representa­tions of Jamaica College’s commitment to developing and transformi­ng the nation by producing a cadre of considerat­e, well-rounded leaders of society, continuing the legacy of Dr Alexander. The Jamaica College Foundation salutes the recipients of the 2018 Carlton Alexander Award for Excellence. We congratula­te and thank our old boys for their trailblasi­ng contributi­ons to securing the legacy of our esteemed school and celebrated nation.
