The following events took place on June 8 in the years identified:
1971:developing A contract aimed at
a national airport to meet aviation needs for the next 20 years is signed between the Ministry of Communications and Works and a Canadian consulting group comprising the Montreal Co. Ltd, and Kates, Peat, Marwick and Co. The study – to be undertaken by the Jamaica Airport Developments Study -1970/90 and will be undertaken at a cost of approximately C$434,500 (J$362,083.00) over nine months.
1994:Two goals from striker Renoldo Stewart lead Hope Valley Primary School to their first lien win towards earning on the Insports Corporate Area Primary Schools football title for the Art and Fabric Trophy as they defeat Holy Family 2-0 in the final at the National Stadium. In the opening minutes, Holy Family pressed for early goals with forwards Rucka DaCosta, Leon Simon and Kevin King moving the ball around and having the opposition’s defence under intense pressure. Hope Valley finally got the break they deserved when Jazel Walters sent through a long ball to Stewart, who beat a defender and placed the ball into the net in the 26th minute. Stewart netted his second goal in the 49th minute with another solo run through the middle from another pass from Walters. Errol Prendergast should have made it 3-0, but with only the keeper to beat, he kicked wide.
2000:The Government is ready to move unilaterally to resolve issues delaying the tabling in Parliament of new labour legislation if employers and the trade unions do not reach a consensus soon. Prime Minister P.J. Patterson issues the warning to representatives of the Joint Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) at a meeting with him at Jamaica House.
